How I stay inspired with my photography

For the last 11 years there has not been many days i have not taken a photograph. I am inspired by life, the mundane, the ordinary. I love to capture the stuff what people miss, walk past or take for granted, but that is just “things” I photograph.

Texture and colour sculptured by light

I have ongoing projects such as my “night light” project where i shoot images using ambient street light and/or shop window light as the main light source. This works better on the dark night in winter where the streets are paved with the golden glow from the street lamps. I love to capture LIGHT, the way it enhances things and gives shape to them, how it cuts through mist giving “feel” and depth to the image.

What about people? I love to photograph people… candidly if at all possible. In a crowd I can disassociate and immerse myself, losing myself observing the nuances of eye contact, facial expressions and interactions between people.

Truly in the moment

So in conclusion my inspiration is light and life. How can one be bored with “nothing to photograph” in a world of visual beauty. I take a camera just about everywhere I go. It is always ready to capture a beautiful light source burning through a cloud or highlighting a flower, capturing interaction and mood between people and last but not least always ready to help me communicate my vision of the world around me.

Cemetery in the mist

The lure of a photographic opportunity is never far behind on a misty morning. I’m lucky to live a few minutes walk from the local cemetery. The oldest part of the cemetery dates back to the 1880’s and looks fantastically eerie in the right light and mist. There are tree lined avenues, old stones, monuments and old Victoria era monuments in the oldest part of the cemetery, bent over, broken and sunk into the earth at odd angles. It really is a great place for some beautiful images.

To me cemeteries bring home my own mortality, we are here for a very brief length of time. Some longer than others. We are all on different journeys but ultimately will are all headed for the same destination.
